PB Chocolate Smoothie

You probably know a little too well by now that I love peanut butter and chocolate.

I’ll tell you that I’m also a fan of peanut butter and chocolate and banana.

I haven’t had much experience making chocolate nice cream in the past because I have always been afraid of the chocolate being too bitter for the smoothie, but since I started trying them with the cacao powder, I can’t stop. It is sooooo good.

It has also led me down a thought trail this week that I have been thinking about during just about every meal:

Why would I ever go to the store and buy the pre-made vegan ice cream that is packed with preservatives and refined sugars when I could make my own with three simple healthful ingredients and improve my health instead of deteriorating it?

Stemming from this ice cream epiphany, I have been thinking about all of the healthful little swaps that are possible in the world. Why would I eat sugar-filled spaghetti sauce when I could make my own with tomatoes and onion and garlic and no sugar at all? Why would I eat potato chips when I could roast my own potatoes without oil or excessive salt? Why would I eat a blueberry muffin when I could swap it for a blueberry smoothie?

My thoughts have been racing, and I have been feeling so good from the food I’ve been eating as a result! Not only has it been more healthful, but it has tasted fresher and more flavorful than any of that other junk.

So without further adieu, I will reveal to you the wonderful recipe for this chocolate peanut butter smoothie. I hope you take this recipe and make it for yourself on a night when you were just about to go to the store for vegan ice cream before remembering that you could make your own super simple health-packed one at home. Where you already have pre-cut and frozen banana slices. And cacao powder.

For peanut butter nice cream
  1. ♥ 1.5 bananas, chopped and frozen
  2. ♥ 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  3. ♥ 1/4 cup water
For chocolate nice cream
  1. ♥ 1.5 bananas, chopped and frozen
  2. ♥ 2 tablespoons cacao powder
  3. ♥ 1/4 cup water
Instructions
  1. Chop and freeze bananas as necessary. I just break mine into three-four chunks each and place them on a wax papered baking sheet in the freezer for at least two hours.
  2. Add bananas, peanut butter, and water to a blender and pulse until mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour the peanut butter layer into a jar.
  4. Add second set of bananas, the cacao powder, and water into the blender and pulse until this mixture is smooth.
  5. Pour the chocolate layer over the peanut butter layer.
  6. Eat up!
Notes
  1. ♥ If you want to mix it all together instead of layering them, just throw everything into the blender all at once: three bananas, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of cacao powder, and 1/2 cup water.
  2. ♥ If you want some fancy layering (such as above where I have more than one layer of each), pour the banana-peanut butter nice cream into a second cup before mixing the banana-chocolate nice cream, then pour the peanut butter from the cup and the chocolate from the blender into layers of desired thickness. I have a little nutri-ninja that I use for these; if you have one, just use one blender cup for peanut butter and one for chocolate.
